England to Start the European Championship 2028 Quest at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium
The English squad will commence their 2028 European Championship adventure at the Manchester City’s stadium, provided that they secure the anticipated passage for a competition staged throughout the bulk of Britain and the Ireland.
The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an Three Lions fixture since May 2016, when the Turkish team were defeated 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to welcome the England side for their first match on Saturday 10 June 2028.
The English side are set to play their final two group matches at the national stadium, but, should they win Group B, their last-16 tie would take place at St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean beginning the elimination stage at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Tournament Opening and Protest
The tournament was inaugurated at an gathering in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday night. Senior figures from the tournament organizers and the host football associations were barracked as they approached the location by approximately 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged Israel to be expelled from international football because of the conflict in Gaza.
Signs were held up with messages reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Timeline
The opening game of the European Championship will be staged at the the national stadium of Wales in the Welsh capital, on Friday 9 June, a match that will feature the Welsh team if they secure a place.
The national stadium will host the two semi-final matches and the final, which will be played on July 9, 2028 with a kick-off time at late afternoon.
It is hoped that an earlier kick-off, which will also be adopted for Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will appeal to families and help connect with a wider spectrum of audiences.
Qualifying Teams
The Republic of Ireland are scheduled to play their first game at the Dublin stadium and the Tartan Army would do the same at the national stadium of Scotland.
The national sides of all four hosts will enter the qualification process; two guaranteed slots will be reserved for any that fail to qualify for Euro 2028 through the standard process.
Stadiums and Playoffs
Villa Park and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium round out the nine host stadiums. All will hold at least one knockout match, with the last eight staged at each country’s national stadium.
The qualifying draw will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a tournament location last year when it emerged the Belfast stadium could not be redeveloped in time, on a date in late 2026.
