The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
