Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD released security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was expected to be a key part of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
