King to Deliver Intimate Statement on Illness in Television Programme
King Charles has recorded a first-hand account regarding his journey with cancer, set to air as part of this year's annual cancer awareness initiative, spearheaded by a leading cancer charity and a television broadcaster.
Official sources stated the King would talk about his "healing process" as a person living with the disease, in a video message on Friday evening at 8pm UK time.
The address, taped inside his London residence recently, will emphasise the critical nature of cancer screening checks to help guarantee more people diagnose the illness at an initial point.
This will be a infrequent public commentary on the health of the Sovereign, who has been in a course of therapy since his condition was announced in early last year. But it is thought unlikely the King will identify his specific form of cancer.
Fundraising Primary Goal
The Stand Up To Cancer campaign each year collects money for medical research and therapies and encourages people to get check-ups to increase the probability of an early diagnosis.
The King's relative openness about his illness, and managing the disease, has been designed to increase understanding and to persuade more people to get tested - and this will be taken a step further with this unusual royal involvement.
So far the King's primary strategy to his cancer has been to continue his schedule, preserving a full diary despite his ongoing course of care, and he is understood not to have desired to be overshadowed by his condition.
This year has seen the Sovereign, undertaking several overseas trips, such as visits to Italy and Canada, and receiving the largest volume of foreign dignitaries to the UK for decades, including the German president recently.
Friday's Broadcast Event
This Friday's awareness programme on Channel 4, featuring presenters such as several TV personalities, will urge people not to be frightened of getting health screenings.
Each presenter have been personally touched by cancer - one host said last month she had received treatment for a tumour, while another presenter was diagnosed with thyroid cancer over a decade ago. Presenter Hills has previously discussed his late father, who had stomach cancer and then later leukaemia.
The broadcast will target the roughly nine million people in the UK who Cancer Research UK estimate are not compliant with public health checks, with an online checker to let people check if they are eligible for tests for key health indicators.
In an attempt to explain health tests and show the benefit of prompt detection there will be a direct feed from cancer clinics at Addenbrooke's and Royal Papworth hospitals in Cambridge.
"The goal is to remove the anxiety out of preventative tests and show everyone that they are not on their own in this," commented one of the hosts.
The Landscape of National Services
Right now in the UK, there are three national health screening services - for specific cancers - available to certain age groups.
A new scheme for lung health is also being gradually implemented for individuals at increased risk of contracting the condition, primarily aimed at people in a specific age bracket, who currently smoke or used to.
Male patients may discuss specific tests, but there is not a universal scheme currently available.
Charitable Impact
The fundraising initiative, which has generated a significant sum over the past decade, is funding dozens of research studies involving thousands of patients.
King Charles, in a statement for attendees at a event for related organisations in April, had spoken of recognising the "daunting and at times alarming experience" for those diagnosed and their families.
But he stated his personal journey of living with cancer had revealed that "the most difficult times of illness can be alleviated by the greatest compassion," as he thanked those who supported cancer patients.
Official sources has not disclosed the specific type of cancer the King has, or the medical care he has received. The King's cancer was identified subsequent to he had had a medical treatment.
