Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters
New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these medications need to be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
