The Gruesome Cartoon Movie Conclusion That Stays With Audiences
Among all the mature animated films I’ve personally watched, nothing has remained with me as much as the dread-soaked finale of the graphically gory and deeply subversive film from 2022 Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, the Spain-based writer-director crafted a dark, bleak , often savage universe with several minor , forlorn hints of optimism.
While Unicorn Wars seems like it came from a drive to expand animation further, the director stated that it was rather an attempt to express a universal, multicultural theme about “the mutual source of each battle.”
That idea is conveyed through a band of colorful pastel bears , obviously inspired by a famous line of cuddly characters.
Being raised in a culture built around warmongering as well as the military-industrial complex, a lot of these creatures are consumed by exterminating the mythical beasts, because of a holy book which states the bears they used to be kings of the woodland, until these creatures drove them out.
A few have not completely accepted the propaganda, and would rather experiment with drugs or engage sexually outdoors.
In contrast to their cuddly counterparts, these colorful critters show genitals and obvious sex drives.
For a certain especially vicious, pessimistic creature, the character Bluey, the battle with the unicorns turns into a route toward dominance — and especially to supremacy above his more tender, kinder brother Tubby.
The character is a bully , a seeming antisocial figure , and as terror takes over his group and kills his teammates one by one, he grabs progressively control personally, through ever more bloody, damaging approaches.
Meanwhile, the unicorns are experiencing their own nightmare, through an expanding, deadly beast in their habitat.
“In the early stages, it feels like a comedy,” the filmmaker commented. “However it evolves into a more serious and sad movie. And by the end, it becomes a terrifying movie.”
Unicorn Wars starts out similar to one of the more quirky films from a legendary animator, that uncover a wicked pleasure in permitting animated figures swear, engage in violence, or have intimate relations.
Then it evolves into more akin to a more grim movie from the same creator, including ever more visual gore and a noticeable relation to genuine horror of conflict.
By the end, it becomes a full-on extreme drama massacre.
The fear that makes this a Halloween-friendly viewing begins well before than indicated.
The Unicorn Wars is one for the devoted gorehounds, for enthusiasts of graphic films who desire to see a movie they haven’t ever watched previously, and who can handle a story that pulls no restraint.
Watch it with the lights off without any distractions, and the conclusion will burrow under your skin and linger.
