The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Music Superstar and Cultural Figure, Passes Away at Eighty-One Years Old
The world grieves the passing of Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican reggae singer and performer whose captivating vocal talent played a key role in popularizing reggae music across the globe. The artist passed away at the age of 81.
“With deep sorrow that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” wrote his spouse Latifa Chambers on Instagram. “I am grateful for his loved ones, close friends, fellow artists and coworkers who shared his life’s path. To all his fans around the world, please know that your encouragement was his strength throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest peacefully. I will honor your wishes.” Her post was co-signed by their offspring, their son and daughter.
Cliff was beloved for hit songs such as “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His optimistic musical style and positive spirit earned him a vast and loyal following.
Beyond his music accomplishments, Cliff starred in the 1972’s crime drama “The Harder They Come”, a performance that was highly acclaimed and is considered a cornerstone of Jamaican cinema.
He was one of just a handful of musicians, alongside Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the esteemed Order of Merit from Jamaica.
