The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the newest animated series from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

Overall, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the music selection.

The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
